Play Wise to Excel in Group Discussion
Performance matters, but excellence is a class apart. To excel in GD, you can make use of tools such as quotes, questions, figures, shock statement, short stories, SPELT and KWA. Quotes can be use to initiate or summarize GD. Questions, if you are planning to ask, make sure you answer them by yourself. Be very specific and clear when you are presenting figures. Shock statements can be derived from newspaper headlines, news in television, debate shows… Short stories which suit to the morale of the GD can be used. Suppose the topic of discussion is “Attitude Matters” you can state this story, “Once upon a time a little boy went to an old man who was selling balloons near the school and asked him whether the red balloon is better or the blue one. The old man said it is not the color of the balloon that makes it better but what is filled inside it that makes it better.” SPELT is nothing but the Social, Political, Economical, Logical, and Analysis of a topic. KWA is the Key Word Approach where in you define the key words first and then discuss your point of view.


Your body language speaks more than what you think, so while participating in GDs sit back and straight in the chair. Do not cross your leg or put one over the other. And have a pleasant smile.

Content of what you speak is equally important as how you speak.  Presenting wrong facts, figures or statistics can land you into more trouble. Similarly beating around the bush can also be easily fished out. While presenting your ideas, do it in a very friendly and acceptable manner.

Do not use words which are complex or the ones that do not fit into the context of the given topic. Vague expression of ideas also does not help you to fetch any points. The language used should be simple and fluent. Your voice should be well modulated. Listening actively accounts for being a god communicator. So be a curious listener to what your teammates.

Attacking people is not at all a wise idea when it comes to a GD. You can attack issues on the contrary. But disagree gracefully if you have to. Anger might build up, but hold on; this is not the place to express it. Being aggressive is an unfriendly group behavior. Suppose a candidate in your group is remaining mute and refusing to speak, then you should not try to push him to talk. This is considered as a dominant feature.

With all these guidelines in mind and in practice you can be an outstanding winner in all GD.
